Dr John – babylon lp

Klassiekertje. De tweede lp van Dr John, opvolger van Gris-Gris, en tot de Amerikaanse Black Friday rerelease van vorig jaar waren we ons er niet zo van bewust dat deze plaat al heel lang niet meer op vinyl leverbaar was. Maar dat bleek het geval dus. Die BF versie was heel erg duur, deze versie op Music on Vinyl is gewoon geprijsd en dus uiterst welkom. ‘Just shortly after his debut album Gris-Gris he created another wonderful record, full of voodoo psychedelia and mysterious R&B melodies. It’s haunting and freaky, but also an attempt by the band to say something about the times during which this album was recorded. The Vietnam war and the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. all had an impact on the unusual musical time signatures and the lyrics about the end of the world.’ Hoogtepunt het zompig rommelende Black Widow Spider, een soort New Orleans versie van Tony Joe White.
